Winter invites us inward - a season for deep rest, reflection, and quiet restoration.

Welcome to Winter - the season of stillness

Winter is the season we are asked to meet ourselves in a deep yin state. In Autumn we let go of what was no longer serving us and now we have the opportunity to reflect on who we are, what we need, how we feel and what we want and what we do and don’t have the energy for. This season asks us to slow right down, shut out all the outside distractions and get quiet. Instead of adhering to what we know we are seeking to find wisdom in knowing what we don’t know. Winter is less about thinking and more about feeling it in our bones, listening to our deep inner wisdom. Resting is essential now so that we will have the energy and the momentum to move effortlessly towards our dreams and goals in spring. Fear is the emotion of winter in Chinese medicine and a lot of people cant sit still because they are afraid of what they will discover about themselves when they do. Stillness requires commitment and courage.

In Ayurveda, Winter and early spring are the Kapha phases of the year bringing deeper awareness to the elements of earth and water elements. This can leave Kapha types feeling cold, dull, heavy and sometimes depressed, they may find themselves emotionally eating or reaching for white food to bring themselves comfort from the melancholy the cooler weather brings. People may find themselves escaping winter for holidays in the sun, this is very common for Vata and Kapha types who have cooler constitutions than pitta types. All constitutions need to ensure they keep their digestive fire (agni) strong in winter. Now is not the time to start your day with cold smoothies or muesli and cold milk. We are wanting to warm the body sipping on ginger teas, enjoying spiced porridges, congees and hearty soups and stews.

Slow down and let winter restore you.

This season in Gather we are going to focus on some autumn themes that I feel relate strongly to menopause.

  • Letting Go from a digestive and emotional perspective.

  • Grief – menopause is one of the biggest times of transitions in a woman’s life, it’s a time of shedding and shredding and nothing is ever quite the same at the end of it.

  • Dryness – a big symptom of menopause is dryness. We will look at ways to remedy it through movement, meditation and food.

  • Addiction to Movement & Clutter – courage to use the Medicine of Subtraction in all aspects of our life.

  • Change and Death – can we accept the impermanence of everything?

  • Foods for Autumn – this season we our masterclass will look at how to cleanse in preparation for winter if that is what you need and how to nourish ourselves with regular grounding warming lubricating food.

  • The Breath - the breath as a tool to help calm anxiety, improve digestion and to connect us to the preciousness of the present moment.
