Join Jody Vassallo for an unforgettable journey though what she believes to be the culinary capital of the world. On this 12 day adventure will eat our way through Japan sampling authentic ramen, soba, sushi, kaiseki, takoyaki, yakitori, matcha and much much more. 

If you’ve always wanted to visit Japan and you love food and adore eating and you’re into yoga then this could be the trip you’ve been dreaming of. 

Jody has been travelling the world for 30 years researching and writing cookbooks. Japan has a special place in her heart. 


Inclusions

  • 12 nights accommodation (in a combination of traditional Japanese ryokan and hotel rooms).

  • 11 breakfasts, 5 lunches & 4 dinners.

  • Guided city highlight tours with English speaking Japanese guide.

  • Cycling tour in Nozawa and Kyoto

  • Cooking classes in Minakami & Beppu

  • Train travel.

* Does not include: Visas, Airport transfers, luggage transfers, drinks and snacks, alcoholic beverages, personal transport in free time in cities, and travel insurance.

* You will need to organise your own flights to Japan you might want to fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka.


  • Meet at our Japanese guest house at 12 noon then we will enjoy lunch together. Check in is from 3pm.

    You can then spend the afternoon wandering on and off Yanaka Ginza into shops selling tea, antiques, woodblock stamps or discovering galleries and exploring the charming cafes the area has to offer.This will allow you a soft landing into Tokyo away from all the bright lights and crowds.

    After enjoying an afternoon in Yanaka we will take the train to Family Yoga School to enjoy a class with my 81 year old teacher Saburo.

    This evening we will enjoy a delicious dinner together at one of Tokyo’s best ramen spots. DINNER INCLUDED

  • We say goodbye to Tokyo this morning. grab breakfast at the station before boarding the train to Jomokogen.

    Lunch will be in Minakami before we take the bus to Takaragawa onsen

    You will then free to enjoy one of Japans most famous rotenburos, Takaragawa onsen.

  • You can enjoy a dip in the onsen before we head off to our soba cooking class at Takumi no sato. After the class you will have a few hours to wander around this historical village sampling apples from local orchard and tofu made on site.

    In the afternoon we make our way to Nozawa

  • We will start the day with a yoga class taught by Jody followed by a breakfast at our hotel.

    Then you can spend the morning enjoying the onsens Nozawa has to offer and wander around the little village before we head out on a guided bike tour (included). that takes us through local villages. Our bike tour concludes at an onsen where we can soak our bodies after the ride before eating lunch at the restaurant.

    In the afternoon we will head up to Maguse Onsen in the mountains.

    Dinner tonight will be in our favourite yakitori restaurant in Nozawa.

  • Today start with a yoga class then we will enjoy a guided tour of Nozawa, we will visit the cooking onsen, sample a range of sweet and savoury oyaki (buckwheat dumplings) and visit some local temples.

    We head out to a nearby village for a handmade soba and buckwheat dumpling lunch made from locally grown buckwheat. served with mountain vegetable tempura.

    This afternoon you have free time to visit the local gin distillery and sample so of the delicious gin they are making here in Nozawa.

  • We say goodbye to Nozawa today and make our way to Takayama via Kanazawa.

    Time to wave goodbye to Nozawa and make our way to Kanazawa. Travel to Kanazawa a small coastal town famous for its seafood and a lively market where you sample the local cuisine. You will have the chance to enjoy Kanazawa curry which is thicker and richer than most Japanese curries. Should you wish you can will try Kanazawa’s legendary Hanton rice which consists of an omelette over rice with fried prawns and rich sauce.

    Lunch today will be at a small sushi restaurant nearby Kenrokeun gardens.

    Once our tummies are full we will head up to Kenrokuen Garden and you will have a few hours to stroll through what is known to be one of top three most beautiful gardens in Japan. Kanazawa is also well known for its gold leaf so you may want to sample gold leaf ice-cream as you wander through the gardens.

    We then head back to Kanazawa station where we will board our bus for Takayama.

    Tonight you are free to wander around Takayama and grab a bite to eat at one of its many local restaurants

  • Today starts with a stroll through Takayama’s local market where you will get to sample taiyaka, local fruits in seasons, roasted sweet potato and sample different varieties of miso.

    We will spend the day exploring Takayama, enjoying lunch at a Hida Beef restaurant where you get to experience why people rave about Wagyu.

    This afternoon are free to do sake tasting or wander through local shops or soak you body in the hotel onsen.

  • This morning we leave Takayama early and head to Kyoto. We will enjoy a Hidden Kyoto bike tour then lunch at a wonderful ramen restaurant at the end of the ride. During the ride we will stop off and visit Kyoto’s oldest sweet shop.

    After the ride we will meet our guide who will take us through the geisha district then onto dinner.

  • We begin the morning with a visit to the Arashiyama bamboo forest then a delicious Japanese breakfast close to our hotel. After breakfast we head to Kyoto station, grab a bento for our journey to Beppu.

    Tonight we enjoy a ryokan style meal in our hotel.

  • Today you will learn to cook torimeshi and dango noodles in a 100 year old Japanese home.

    After the class we will have a guided tour of Beppu visiting the hells, eating onsen cooked foods.

    In the afternoon we will board the bus for Yufuin

  • This morning we will enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast in our hotel before taking the bus to Kurokawa a beautiful onsen town nestled in the mountains. We will spend the day sampling local foods and enjoying a range of onsens

    We will finish the day with a kaiseki style dinner together in our hotel.

  • We spend the day exploring the area of Yufuin doing any last minute shopping

  • We enjoy one more fantastic breakfast and onsen at our hotel this morning Then we head into Yufuin to check out the lake and wander through the village getting in any last minute shopping before jumping on a bus to Fukouka and then boarding a plane back to Tokyo’s Narita airport..

The trip is designed to give you a snap shot of how Japanese people eat everyday. We will be sampling street food in local markets, enjoying bento lunch boxes as we travel across the country by fast train, enjoying locally made milk ice cream as we soak our feet in a foot onsen and much much more.
